“the soothseekers have withdrawn
you feel no ghost, only a sporic chorus
when that place utters its worn sigh
let us have peace
And the shattered head answers back
And I believed I was loved, I believed I loved
Who did this to us?”
—Adrienne Rich
This is the tombstone of Rebecca Ramey. In 1885, she and her daughter Mary were attacked by a sadistic killer who later became known as the Servant Girl Annihilator. Though Rebecca managed to survive the savage attack, her little girl did not. The murderer was never found. I went on a godless endeavor to find the graves of the Servant Girl Annihilator victims but only managed to find two - the rest are lost to time, vandalism and the casual racism that resulted in neglect in certain sections of cemeteries. Rebecca lies in Oakwood Cemetery in Austin, Texas, in the “colored” section.
(My pictures are seldom good and almost never edited - I tend to just document and let the visuals fall where they may. So you will never likely find art here. Sadly)
